About the Dingwall Newton Room
Our newest Newton Room is an inspirational space for learning how STEM subjects relate to the real world and opening up career possibilities for everyone.
This is a full-time facility, hosted within Dingwall Town Hall. The room was repurposed earlier in 2022 and includes a beautiful lab space for lots of experimenting and exploration.
Catchment areas includes Alness Academy, Dingwall Academy, Dornoch Academy, Fortrose Academy, Gairloch High School, Golspie High School, Invergordon Academy, Tain Royal Academy, Ullapool High School and their associated primary schools.

Here is a bit of Oliver's background...
"I’ve always been fascinated with how things work, needing to understand why something acts the way it does and never being content with the answer of “because it does”. I was always building and designing things from a young age and it was that continual desire to understand that spurred my interest in Science.
I went on to study Robotics and Cybertronics for several years before finding that I wasn’t getting the depth of knowledge I craved, so I moved to Pure mathematics and studied how physics really worked. It was during this time that I realised that knowing and understanding are very different things and from there I went on to study education with the intent to help others understand why they are learning the things they are, other than to simply pass a test.
Outside of work my hobbies are very similar to my work. I enjoy designing and fabricating. During the lockdowns I had enough time to delve into fabrication with other materials. It was during this time that I found I could make almost anything I could visualise, and with the help of my children, proceeded to make a life sized Iron Man suit, which is currently guarding my Newton Room, as well as an entire box filled with props and weapons from the Marvel Universe.
Working at the Science Skills academy has given me a way to funnel my creativity into more than just toys, It lets me explore the subjects and help young minds to understand why things are what they are, hopefully inspiring them to also always ask the question of why."
