About the Thurso Newton Room

An inspirational space for learning how STEM subjects relate to the real world and opening up career possibilities for everyone.

This is a full-time facility hosted at North Highland College. The catchment area includes Farr High School, Kinlochbervie High School, Thurso High School, Wick High School and their associated primary schools.

We've delivered a wide range of sessions since our opening in March 2019 and pupils love spending time in our STEM learning room and lab.

Aileen Simmonite is our STEM Engagement Officer (SEO) in Thurso.  If you would like to book your class for a session at our Thurso Newton Room or just find out a bit more about the modules we deliver, email Aileen at Aileen.Simmonite@highland.gov.uk

Here is a bit of Aileen's background...

"I have always enjoyed playing sports and have been playing rugby, golf and doing highland dancing since I was young. More recently I have become involved in Parkrun. I don’t enjoy running but have become a regular volunteer and last year stepped up to become one the run directors at Thurso Parkrun, taking charge of the event and organising the other volunteers.

Through my participation in sport I have had the opportunity to do lots of really exciting things, including playing in the Scottish women’s cup final at Murrayfield stadium and taking part in several dance shows.

I no longer dance anymore, I teach it instead. Although I miss dancing its great to see the children I teach learning and improving all the time, making new friends and enjoying being active.

My love of sport led me to study Sports and Exercise Science at Heriot Watt University and after graduating I stayed in Edinburgh working as a lifeguard. During this time I continued to develop my own skills and gain new qualifications, for example I completed my NPLQ trainer/assessor qualification so I could train up others as lifeguards.

After 11 years in Edinburgh I was ready to move back home to Thurso and in 2015 the opportunity arose when I successfully applied for an active schools coordinator position. I enjoyed working with the schools and sports coaches but I really wanted a more hands on role where I could interact with people on a daily basis. When I saw the STEM Engagement Officer role in the Newton Room advertised I decided I would go for it and was lucky enough to get it.

I really enjoy working in the Newton Room. I am constantly having to learn new things and challenge myself so I can deliver our modules to the pupils but it’s really good fun. Each day is different, one day I am programming robots and the next I am dissecting lungs, it is never boring.

Seeing the pupils enjoying themselves, learning lots of new things and leaving full of enthusiasm is really rewarding. It’s a great feeling knowing that you have given so many children such a memorable day that will stay with them for years to come."
